Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpa Grande Montreux Jazz Festival, steel, 2013. PF331 self-winding calibre, twin series-coupled barrels, 32 jewels, 55-hour power reserve. Polished steel tonneau case, teardrop lugs, screwed sapphire back, manufacture signature and case number engraved in the metal. Night blue dial, motif after the festival's official poster, applied Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 o'clock, faceted luminous hour markers, luminous delta hands, centre seconds. Sapphire crystal. Black Hermès leather strap, Parmigiani Fleurier folding clasp.
Horological context
Parmigiani Fleurier was founded in 1996 in Fleurier, in the heart of the Val-de-Travers, by Michel Parmigiani, a restorer of antique pieces who turned to creating his own. The maison makes everything on site, with the exception of the leather straps, which are supplied by Hermès. Its first calibre, the PF110, appeared in 1998 in tonneau form, with twin series-coupled barrels and an eight-day reserve. The Kalpa collection followed in 2001 and took up that geometry: tonneau case, sapphire crystal on both sides, and teardrop lugs whose contours Michel Parmigiani drew from the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence. From the mid-2000s it is driven by the PF331, the manufacture's first self-winding movement. Parmigiani Fleurier joined the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2007 — founded in 1967 by Claude Nobs, Géo Voumard and René Langel — and became its principal partner. Each spring the dial workshop waits for the official poster to be published before producing a special series. These watches are presented on stage at the end of the concerts to artists chosen by the festival, headliners and emerging names alike, to leave them a record of their time in Montreux.
Character
The dial reproduces the festival's official 2013 poster by Oscar Oiwa: eight figures caught in a jam session, held in the night blue and surfacing according to the angle of the light. The words Montreux Jazz Festival 2013 are printed on the sapphire back, above the movement. The 2013 series runs to ten watches, five Kalpa Grande and five Kalpa XL. Claude Nobs, who founded the festival in 1967 and ran it until his death in January 2013, is absent from it for the first time.
