Horological context
The bubble back nickname refers to Rolex's earliest Oyster Perpetual watches, recognisable by their domed case back. The watch combines two of the maison's founding innovations: the waterproof Oyster case, patented in 1926, and the Perpetual rotor movement developed in the early 1930s — it was the thickness of this self-winding rotor that dictated the characteristic back from which the line takes its name. Produced from the 1930s to the mid-1950s, the bubble back marks the advent of the automatic, waterproof wristwatch. The Lady versions, such as the Ref. 5003, carry this architecture in reduced proportions.
