Identity
Hermès Cape Cod TGM, Ref. CD6.710, 2010s. Automatic movement. Steel case, 36 × 48 mm, "square within a rectangle" architecture, crown bearing the H monogram, case back engraved in bas-relief with the Hermès coat of arms. Anthracite gradient dial, guilloché square centre, applied steel Arabic numerals, date window at 3 o'clock. Sapphire crystal. Leather strap, signed Hermès steel folding clasp.
Horological context
La Montre Hermès was established in 1978 in Biel, Switzerland: the Parisian house, a saddler since 1837, set up its watchmaking division there and entrusted its first models to Henri d'Origny. The Cape Cod appeared in 1991, designed by that same Henri d'Origny. Asked to conceive a square watch, he preferred the rectangle and set one within the other: "a square within a rectangle". The form comes from the link of the Chaîne d'ancre cut in two, a motif imagined by Robert Dumas in 1938 during a stay on the Normandy coast and since become one of the maison's emblems. The Cape Cod has since been offered in several sizes, up to the very large model, in steel as in gold.
Character
The gradient of the dial darkens towards the edges and deepens the guilloché square at the centre. The applied numerals, in the line's own typography, catch the light against the anthracite ground. In the TGM size, the open lugs, inherited from the Chaîne d'ancre link, read at a glance.
