Longines 9ct Yellow Gold, cushion shape, circa 1947
Identity
Longines cushion-shaped, 9-carat yellow gold, circa 1947. Manual-winding movement. Cushion case 31 × 31 mm, milled crown. Iridescent dial, blued open-worked hands, small seconds at 6 o'clock. Plexiglas crystal. Leather strap, pin buckle.
Horological context
Longines was founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier, in the Swiss Jura, by Auguste Agassiz. The manufacture takes its name from the Les Longines site, where Ernest Francillon brought his production under one roof in 1867; it was there that the winged hourglass appeared, registered in 1889 and today the oldest watchmaking trademark still in use. Longines built its reputation on precision: observatory chronometry, navigation and aviation instruments, sports timekeeping. In the 1940s that same exactingness carried into its dress watches — shaped cases with clean lines, carefully finished dials, small manual movements — of which this gold cushion case is an example.
Character
The 9-carat gold of the case — a fineness particular to the British market — ties this example to Longines' output destined for England, confirmed by the commemorative dedication engraved on the caseback, addressed to D.A. Dunlop and located in Southport, England.
