Watchmaking Context
The Datejust was introduced by Rolex in 1945 for the company's fortieth anniversary. It was the first series-produced wristwatch to feature an instantaneous date change window, patented by Rolex, and the five-link Jubilee bracelet was designed for it. It inaugurated the essential codes that would define the Rolex dress line for the 20th century: Oyster case, fluted bezel, applied dial, cyclops above the date window — added in 1953. The first automatic references quickly followed — Ref. 4467 then 6075, 6105, 6305, 6605 up to Ref. 1601 launched in 1959, the first Datejust to bear the inscription Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified. Calibres 1065 then 1066, 1565 and 1575 depending on the period. Original water resistance 100 meters.
Personality
The red date, the unique splash of color, contrasts with the soft salmon of the dial — an unusual combination for a steel Datejust.
