Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Ref. 6605, late 1950s. Automatic movement. 18K gold Oyster case, 36 mm diameter, signed screw-down crown, fluted gold bezel. Cream dial, applied gold arrow-head indexes and gold dauphine hands, date window at 3 o'clock with cyclops lens. Plexiglass crystal. 18K gold Rolex Jubilee bracelet and signed clasp. Engraved with Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified.
Horological context
The Datejust was introduced by Rolex in 1945 for the brand's fortieth anniversary. It was the first production wristwatch to incorporate an instantly changing date window, patented by Rolex, and the five-link Jubilee bracelet was designed specifically for it. It introduced the essential codes that would define the Rolex dress watch lineage for the 20th century: Oyster case, fluted bezel, applied dial, cyclops lens over the date window — added in 1953. The first automatic references quickly followed — Ref. 4467 then 6075, 6105, 6305, 6605 up to Ref. 1601 launched in 1959, the first Datejust to bear the inscription Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified. Calibers 1065 then 1066, 1565 and 1575 depending on the period. Original water resistance 100 meters.
