Rolex Submariner Date reference 1680, ca. 1977. Rolex calibre 1570 automatic, non-quickset. Oyster steel case, 40 mm diameter, Twinlock screw-down crown, unidirectional rotating bezel with aluminium insert. Black dial, date window at three o'clock with cyclops. Plexiglas crystal. Horological context
The Submariner was introduced by Rolex in 1954 with references 6204 and 6205, presented at the Basel Fair. It established the grammar that would define the model: Oyster case, screw-down crown, unidirectional rotating bezel graduated to 60 minutes, water resistance to 100 metres. The lineage developed along two branches. The no-date Submariner encompasses references 6536, 5508, 5512 and 5513, the latter produced from 1962 to 1989. The Submariner Date opened in 1966 with reference 1680, the first to incorporate a date window and cyclops. Technical evolutions followed: calibre 1520 then 3130 and 3135, the replacement of plexiglas with sapphire at the turn of the 1980s, and water resistance increased to 300 metres.
