Identity

Cartier Diabolo, Ref. 1450, 1990s. Quartz movement. Round 18-carat yellow gold case, 27 mm, bezel paved with three rows of diamonds, arched lugs with diamond-paved terminals, diamond-paved crown. White dial signed Cartier, Roman numerals, railway minute track, blued steel Breguet hands. Mineral crystal. Leather strap, signed Cartier gold folding clasp.

Horological context

Cartier — "the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers", in the phrase attributed to King Edward VII — made the watch a jewel from the early twentieth century. The Diabolo appeared in the early 1990s, taking up the design of certain ladies' watches from the beginning of the century: a round case framed by two arched lugs ending in terminals. Its name recalls the toy of the same name, whose silhouette the crown echoes. It was offered in quartz and, within the Collection Privée Cartier Paris (1998-2008), with manual winding, up to diamond-paved executions.

Character

Three rows of diamonds dome the bezel and ring the dial with an unbroken halo. The arched lugs close on paved terminals that answer the set crown. At the centre, the white dial with Roman numerals and blued Breguet hands keeps a classic reading, hiding its secret Cartier signature within the numeral VII.
