Chanel J12 Black Diamond Bezel, Ref. H2571, 2012. Quartz movement. High-resistance black ceramic case, 29 mm, bezel set with 40 brilliant-cut diamonds, crown with black onyx cabochon. Black lacquered dial, Arabic numerals 12, 3, 6 and 9 in white and eight diamond indexes, white sword-shaped hands. Sapphire crystal. Black ceramic link bracelet with Chanel invisible folding clasp.
Horological context
Chanel entered watchmaking in 1987 with the Première. The J12 followed in 2000. Designed by Jacques Helleu, Chanel's artistic director, it took its name from the J-Class yachts. It was fine watchmaking's first deliberately unisex watch — couture met sportiness. The material was a visionary choice: high-resistance black ceramic, virtually scratch-proof and then unprecedented at this scale. The silhouette set the codes: notched rotating bezel, integrated link bracelet, satin finish. The white version arrived in 2003. Smaller sizes followed in 33, 34 and 29 mm, automatic or quartz, with or without date, often gem-set. For its tenth anniversary in 2010, Chanel introduced the J12 Marine, a diver water-resistant to 300 metres with a unidirectional bezel. This aesthetic and technical vision has changed little since. It has won the hearts of a loyal global audience and made the J12 one of horology's early-21st-century icons.
