Identity
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 6265, 1976. Valjoux calibre 727, manual winding, column-wheel chronograph movement. Oyster steel case, 37 mm diameter, screw-down crown and screw-down pushers. Engraved steel tachymetric bezel. Silver Sigma dial, black registers at 9, 6 and 3 o'clock. Hesalite crystal. Rolex Oyster steel bracelet, 271 end-links, signed deployant clasp.
Horological context
The Cosmograph Daytona was introduced by Rolex in 1963 with reference 6239, in response to motor-racing pilots' demand for a water-resistant chronograph with a tachymetric bezel. Reference 6265 succeeded it in 1971, retaining the Valjoux calibre 727 inherited from the 6263 but distinguished by its engraved steel bezel replacing the Bakelite insert. Produced until 1988, the 6265 marks the end of the manual-winding Daytona era before the introduction of the automatic reference 16520 in 1988. Screw-down crown and pushers ensure the chronograph's water resistance — a distinctive Rolex characteristic compared to contemporary chronographs with simple pushers.
Character
Silver Sigma dial without "DAYTONA" signature on the dial — a less common configuration in 6265 production, where the arched signature appears on the majority of silver dials.
Watch delivered with its original Rolex presentation box and warranty certificate dated July 1976. Documented Rolex Bienne service in 1984. Contre-Temps 24-month warranty.
