Rolex Lady Hinged-Case Rose Gold, 1917
Identity

Horological context
Founded in London in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis, the firm that took the name Rolex in 1908 was among the pioneers of the wristwatch, at a time when it was still seen as a novelty beside the pocket watch. As early as 1910, a Rolex became the first wristwatch in the world to earn the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, followed in 1914 by a distinction from the Kew Observatory. The earliest Rolex watches retained the heritage of the pocket watch: a round case, a hinged back opening onto the movement, soldered wire lugs and an enamel dial. The figure XII painted in red, very fashionable around 1910, is one of their signatures. Made notably for women in small gold cases, these pieces rank among the oldest survivors in Rolex's history.
